Stenders team joins an international organisation  and engages in improving urban environment

Some time has already passed since the public transport stop at the Riga, 13th January Street opposite the Stockmann trade centre has acquired a new look — it has been transformed into a blooming flower bed. This is thanks to the Stenders team, who, armed with sacks of black soil, spades, rakes, flowers and watering cans, changed the trampled stop beyond recognition over just a few hours; now Riga another pretty and green place.

For Stenders this was the launch event for a new tradition — the green Thursdays. This tradition aims to invite residents to put the urban environment in order, demonstrating that the exercise is a simple and fun thing to do for a good cause alongside with your friends. All that you need is a place that should be put in order, to collect the needed materials and agree on the time when you carry out the activity; and the result is another place made pretty.

We wish to invite everybody to take part in this project. Information about the following places that will be put into order and the time schedule will be available on the home page of Stenders (www.stendersshop.com), where proposals can also be submitted about the locations and the objects that should be put into order,by writing to the e-mail shop@stenders.lv .

It was Richard Reynolds who started the movement of voluntary cultivation of derelict venues in the urban environment and who has set up the social organisation Guerilla Gardening. It originates from England, but has successfully spread its activity across the world; it aims for clean and well-kept public environment and for cultivation of green environment.

Stenders has also joined this movement. To promote the creation of green environment in Latvia, within its “Green Thursday” project Stenders shops in Riga (except international webshop) will hand out plant seeds as a gift with every purchase above 8 LVL every Thursday, starting from 24 /09/ 2009.
